If you are travelling on an Umrah visa or as a visiting pilgrim outside Hajj season, you are free to arrange your own transport — which is exactly why booking ahead beats negotiating in a crowded arrivals hall.

Land at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah instead and the terminal is smaller and pickup is simpler, but the same rule holds: know who is meeting you before your wheels touch down.

Outside nearly every arrivals hall in Jeddah, someone will offer you a taxi "at a good price" before you've even reached the exit. Some are legitimate. Plenty are unlicensed drivers operating outside the Transport General Authority (TGA) system that regulates taxis and limousine services in Saudi Arabia — and they're the reason so many pilgrims land expecting to pay SAR 250 and are asked for SAR 500 halfway through the journey.

The fix has nothing to do with luck: agree the fare in writing, by message, before you get in the car — not after your bags are already in the boot. A price quoted verbally in the arrivals hall with no paper trail is a price that can change once you're moving and have nowhere else to go.

  • Get the fare in writing (a WhatsApp message is enough) before boarding — never accept "we'll sort the price on the way."
  • A licensed vehicle carries visible official plates, and a genuine driver won't hesitate if asked to confirm details.
  • If the price changes mid-journey, that's the clearest sign you're dealing with an unlicensed operator — not a normal misunderstanding.
  • Fixed, per-vehicle pricing — not per-passenger, not metered — is the norm for legitimate pilgrim transport. Treat anything else as a red flag.

How do I avoid taxi scams or unlicensed drivers at Jeddah Airport?

Makkah to Madinah: Private Taxi or the Haramain Train?

The two holy cities sit around 450 km apart. Pilgrims usually choose between a private intercity taxi — around 4 to 4.5 hours door-to-door via the Al-Hijrah Expressway — or the Haramain High-Speed Rail, which covers the distance in roughly 2 hours at speeds up to 300 km/h.

The train wins on raw speed between stations. It loses on almost everything around the edges: Makkah's station sits well outside the central Haram area, and Madinah's station is similarly on the city's outskirts — so you still need a taxi at both ends, plus you're carrying luggage through a station and working around a fixed timetable instead of your own.

For a solo traveller on a tight budget, the train can be the cheaper option. Should I take a taxi or the Haramain train between Makkah and Madinah?

The train is faster city-to-city, but both stations sit outside the central Haram areas, so you'll still need a taxi at each end. A private taxi is door-to-door from hotel to hotel with no transfers — usually the more practical choice for families, groups, or anyone travelling with more than hand luggage.

Weather and Timing: When Your Trip Happens Actually Matters

Makkah and Madinah are genuinely hot for most of the year, and it shapes how a taxi journey should be planned. Between roughly June and September, daytime temperatures in Makkah routinely reach 42–48°C, and even a short walk from a drop-off point to your hotel entrance is uncomfortable — this is when air conditioning that actually works, and a driver who won't leave you waiting outside, matters more than usual.

The most popular Umrah season runs from November through March, when temperatures settle into a far more manageable 20–30°C range and the majority of international pilgrims travel. Book your airport transfer and any Ziyarat tour further ahead during these months, as demand for vehicles rises with it.

Ramadan is its own category: night-time Umrah crowds swell dramatically after Iftar, roads around the Haram in Makkah see heavy congestion through the final ten nights, and a journey that normally takes 15 minutes can take an hour. If your trip falls in Ramadan, build in extra time — your driver will route around the busiest streets rather than through them.

During Hajj season, in the days around 8–13 Dhul Hijjah, large areas around Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah are closed to general traffic under the Tafweej system, and only vehicles holding Hajj transport permits can enter.
