Arriving at Jeddah or Madinah Airport: How Pickup Actually Works

Most Umrah pilgrims land at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah, around 80 km — roughly 70 to 90 minutes by road depending on traffic — from central Makkah. Pilgrims travelling on a Hajj visa during the Hajj season itself are usually routed through the organised Tafweej transport system rather than a private taxi. If you are travelling on an Umrah visa or as a visiting pilgrim outside Hajj season, you are free to arrange your own transport — which is exactly why booking ahead beats negotiating in a crowded arrivals hall.

The fix has nothing to do with luck: agree the fare in writing, by message, before you get in the car — not after your bags are already in the boot. A price quoted verbally in the arrivals hall with no paper trail is a price that can change once you're moving and have nowhere else to go.

  • Get the fare in writing (a WhatsApp message is enough) before boarding — never accept "we'll sort the price on the way."
  • A licensed vehicle carries visible official plates, and a genuine driver won't hesitate if asked to confirm details.

How do I avoid taxi scams or unlicensed drivers at Jeddah Airport?

Makkah to Madinah: Private Taxi or the Haramain Train?
